Emergency NOIT Information

A federal rule was implemented on October 14th, 2026, that allows the federal government to terminate a refugee’s status if they do not respond to a specific letter (a Notice of Intent to Terminate or NOIT) within 13 days of it being mailed (Day 1 starts on the first day the letter is mailed, and the response must be mailed back and received by USCIS (United States Customs and Immigration Services) by the 13th day).

If the family does not get the response mailed back (and received) by USCIS by the 13th day, their refugee status is terminated, along with their work authorization. And they become undocumented, and the government can begin removal proceedings. If one person in the family receives this letter and does not return it on time, the rule states that the entire family associated with that person’s case may potentially lose their status and work authorization as well.

It is critical that our refugee families, and the people who work with them, understand the steps that need to be taken, to prevent this immediate termination of refugee status.
